The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that President Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, will rededicate the St. George Utah Temple next month.

President Holland will preside at the two dedicatory sessions, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., on Dec. 10, 2023. The sessions will be broadcast to all congregations within the temple district.

President Holland is a native of St. George and was married there to his late wife, Sister Patricia Terry Holland, in 1963. He rededicated the historic St. George Tabernacle in July 2018 and presided at the November 2020 groundbreaking of the city’s second temple, the Red Cliffs Utah Temple,

In early May of this year, the Church announced the rededication of its longest-operating house of the Lord following an extensive renovation of more than three years. At the time of the announcement, no presiding Church leader was designated to preside at the rededication services.

The public open house, which began on Sept. 15 and ran for nearly two months, recently concluded on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Just last week, President Holland was set apart as the latest Acting President of the Twelve, succeeding President M. Russell Ballard, who passed away Nov. 12.

In October 2018 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced the Church’s intention to renovate its pioneer temples, with the St. George Utah Temple the first to since be completed.

Renovation plans and exterior renderings were released in May 2019, with the temple closing in early November of the same year.

The plans for the temple were announced a month after those of the extensive Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square renovation project, detailed in April 2019; but the Salt Lake Temple closed a month after the St. George temple did.

The Manti Utah Temple began its renovation in October 2021. The Church also announced Monday, Nov. 20, the open house plans and April 21 rededication date for that temple.

The four pioneer-era houses of the Lord — the St. George, Logan, Manti and Salt Lake temples — are among the 28 total in the state of Utah, which is home to the Church’s worldwide headquarters and nearly 2.2 million Latter-day Saints.

Utah’s other dedicated and currently operating temples are the Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Jordan River, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos, Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain, Payson, Provo, Provo City Center, Saratoga Springs and Vernal temples.

Two temples are scheduled for upcoming dedications — the Orem Utah Temple on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024, and the Red Cliffs Utah Temple in St. George on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Eight other Utah temples are under construction — Deseret Peak, Ephraim, Heber Valley, Layton, Lindon, Smithfield, Syracuse and Taylorsville.
