During a special Thanksgiving service project at the Provo Missionary Training Center, 1,471 elders and sisters worked to address domestic hunger in the United States.

The missionaries — who also heard a devotional message from Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles — assembled 409,248 meals in connection with Hunger Fight that will be distributed throughout Utah by the Utah Food Bank, said President Kevin Calderwood, president of the Provo Missionary Training Center.

Founded in 2012, Hunger Fight, founded in 2012, has a “Feed the Backpacks” program that provides weekend nutrition for elementary-aged children on the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Plan. While these children receive food at school, many are at risk for hunger over the weekend.

“Serving others is an expression of our gratitude for all that our Savior, Jesus Christ, has blessed us with,” said President Calderwood. “Fighting hunger in our backyards is an expression of our love for our fellowman.”
