Deeper Things (Fall 2017)

Welcome to the Autumn session of “Deeper Things!” The purpose of this group/undertaking/project or whatever you want to call it is to explore a book of profundity, a tome of grand ideas, a stirring theological treatise together and then gather from time to time to talk about what we are thinking about. We are reading Faith in the Face of Empire: The Bible Through Palestinian Eyes by Mitri Raheb. We are reading this together to hear a voice from the worldwide Lutheran communion, as an honoring of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. We are also encountering this book so as to come alongside of our Young Adult in Global Mission, Lars Anderson, learning a bit more about the context in which he will be serving. I think it will be a fruitful exploration of the experience of Palestinian people, as well as an insight into the lives of our global partners in ministry. We will seek to gather together every two weeks or so to discuss what we have been thinking about. I am looking forward to this journey with you!

Week 3: October 8-14: Chapters 4 and 5—Palestine and The Empire (p. 49-66)
Week 4: October 15-21:Chapters 6 and 7—The People of Palestine and God (p. 67-92) Meet this week
Week 5: October 22-28: Chapters 8 and 9 and the Epilogue—Jesus and The Spirit and the   Epilogue 9 (p. 93-130) Meet this week

“Non-violent  and creative resistance, liberty and freedom, equality for women, and a culture of an abundant life are important ingredients for the future of Palestine and the Middle East.”
“Can we imagine another Middle East? Can there be a different future? These are important questions in the Bible, as well as in the context of the current Arab Spring. Prophetic       imagination helps us see beyond the current realities, and Christian hope empowers us to move to put a new vision into action.”  Taken from the Forward
